LOST CARNIVAL APPLICATION
PLAYER↴ Name: Quix Contact: Other Characters: Steven Universe CHARACTER↴ Character Name: Sans (the Skeleton) Age: 32 Species: Skeleton Monster Canon: Undertale Canon Point: Failed Genocide => Neutral route, where all bosses are killed but not all monsters have been killed, and nobody becomes king. Soon after he calls the player to tell them how fucked up things are. Character Info: Wiki here! Personality: Sans is a character that is more or less aware of the fact that he exists in a world with the temporal mechanics of an RPG video game. It's not so much that he breaks the fourth wall (though he strays in that direction more than once) by being aware that he is a fiction character, so much as he is aware that someone (IE. the player/protagonist) is capable of starting and stopping their timeline on a whim, travelling back to their previous "save" points and repeatedly erasing large sections of timestream in an attempt to satisfy their desires. That is, he's aware that you, the player, are playing through the story, perhaps multiple times, in an attempt to discover multiple end outcomes, or perhaps just to make up for past mistakes. From his perspective, as a character in the game, it mostly just feels like you are constantly erasing whatever small progress they've made towards escaping their underground prison and forcing them to repeat the same series of potential events over and over - perhaps, for the rest of time. Sans is one of the only characters acutely aware of this cycle, ostensibly remembering aspects of multiple (if not all) timeline iterations. More than that, he's been forced to bear witness to the process enough times that he's lost the will to put much effort into any one individual cycle, knowing that at any moment they could be dragged back to an earlier point in time, and have their memories erased once again. While the reasons for why he in particular knows so much about this cycle is unclear, it likely has to do with his own scientific exploration into the phenomenon, as well as his expert grasp on space-time bending magics. Of course, given the rough effect this has had on him psychologically, it could hardly be considered a gift. So, what do you do when you know that all your progress is going to be undone at any given moment? When you know that, no matter how many times you win, the enemy can just restart and try again until the one time they best you? Mostly, you get really lazy. We don't know exactly how much of Sans's present behavior was part of his personality before he discovered the resets in the the timeline, but considering that he was apparently an accomplished scientist, its likely that his life ambitions have lowered significantly. Instead of trying to make a difference with research or with his incredibly potent magical abilities, he mostly spends his days lazing about, eating, sleeping, and pulling off stupid pranks. He technically works as a sentry for the town of Snowdin, but instead of actually doing his job he just sells (sometimes fake) hot dogs to people and practices cheesy knock knock jokes in the woods. With the absence of any permanent future to look forward to, Sans instead sets his sights on the small things in life. The very, very small things. The joy of doing absolutely nothing, for example, with a small side of bad jokes and good food. Even in the worst timelines, even in the timelines where his brother Papyrus is brutally murdered, it takes a lot to get Sans to act. Though he functions as the end boss fight of the "Genocide" or "Murder Everything" route through the game, it takes not only killing his brother and all his friends, but also killing every single monster you encounter. Any less than that and Sans will just wait for the opportunity to give you a scolding for your actions towards the end, questioning your choices but ultimately not doing anything to stop you. After all, even if Papyrus was killed this time, he might not be the next. Even if he had managed to save Papyrus early on, it would just take a reset to make it happen all over again. What's the point? Which is saying a lot when caring for Papyrus is probably the only thing he goes above and beyond for. He can't actually give enough of a shit to clean the house, of course, but he pointedly encourages the protagonist towards being kind to his brother on numerous occasions, talking genuinely about how cool and amazing he considers Papyrus to be. He apparently goes as far as to read Papyrus bedtime stories (despite Papyrus being a teen or young adult) and to give him action figures at Christmas while dressed as Santa. While he doesn't intervene, killing Papyrus is the only act of evil he will specifically condemn you for while giving judgement. The rest seems more like background noise. He can only muster a few shits to give at a time, so he's gotta use them wisely. In this particular canon point, he has more or less allowed (through inaction) all of his friends and most of his species to be murdered by the player character, and has nothing left to do but wait for this particularly abysmal timeline to end. Despite the fact that they have all been left to slowly die off, more or less, he can’t even muster much vitriol towards the player when he calls them after the fact. This timeline is a particular low point for him, and while he is fairly certain it will all just start over with time, it doesn’t mean that the misery of this particular sequence of events isn’t the thing most fresh in his memory. Abilities: TELEPORTATION: Sans can manipulate time space in a manner that allows him to teleport from location to location, essentially instantaneously. There is no flash or pop or any kind of obvious effect to go along with it, either, so he is a bit notorious for just appearing out of nowhere like he’s been standing there the whole time. There are no set limits for his teleportation given in canon, but given the fact that he grew up in the underground, he’s probably only ever had practice teleporting the approximate distance that the underground spans, which is probably several miles. It’s also not clear how much additional mass he can take with him - probably only a few people’s at a time. SPACE TIME MANIPULATION: Along with the teleporting, it also seems that he can magically manipulate space time in a general sense, though little of it has been shown in great detail. When fighting him, it seems that he is capable of causing time to skip back and forth by small amounts, allowing his attacks to approach much more suddenly than expected. One thing he is definitely not capable of, however, is full blown time travel, though some aspect of his connection to space time may be what allows him to more clearly perceive previous timelines and the fact that resets happens. GRAVITY MANIPULATION: Something referred to as “blue magic”, this seems to generally be capable of manipulating kinetic energy, particularly gravity. With this, Sans is capable of causing objects, other people, and himself to either float or to smack down hard into the ground or walls. Primarily, it’s used to pin people to the ground when attacking, but he’s also used it for throwing them around in a manner similar to telekinesis. BONE SUMMONING: Sans (and other skeletons, apparently) can summon up magical bones to use as weapons and move around at will. There’s nothing particularly complex about how they function, thought hey can easily move fast enough to bludgeon people to death. GASTER BLASTERS: Sans’s blasters are a kind of magical summon he uses to attack - specifically they are skull monsters that can breathe blue lasers. He can summon multiple of them at a time, and can be very damaging. SCIENCE MAGIC: Sans was a scientist who studied magic for a period of his life, and was ostensibly good at it.Though a lot of it isn’t gone into detail as Sans is a mysterious character, it’s feasible that he could would also have some more diverse skills as monsters are an inherently magical species. CARNIVAL↴ Soul Colour: Cyan Ideal Job: Warden (Supervisor) Relevant Experience:
Carnival History: Sans joined the carnival willingly during a particularly rough time in his life. It was the end of a particularly awful timeline, and he has been in a position of being helpless to do anything but just wait for things to reset, before discovering a gateway to the carnival suddenly changed all that. He ended up tracking down the Ringmaster without falling for any of the carnival’s tricks, but signed on of his own volition, challenging her to show him the truth of the timeline anomalies plaguing his homeworld. She managed to bring back more detailed memories of past timelines for him as payment for his services, which… wasn’t actually that helpful, at first. The knowledge plagued him, and Sans spent his first months in the carnival particularly depressed. Separated from the only home he’d known and filled with guilt for having abandoned it, he could only be drawn out of his lethargy by his natural curiosity about the things going on around him. He was experiencing a great many firsts, having grown up in a prison, but so much of it was coasting on by in the face of crippling depression. Eventually, he let his tendency towards apathetic sloth get the best of him. He ended up getting formally scolded and punished for a near total refusal to actually do his job, and something about the experience woke him up to his surroundings. Depression turned into resentment, and with something to pin his frustrations on he gradually managed to open up a bit to the connections he’d made in his stay so far. The idea that life and death mattered again was slowly sinking in, as was the idea that he may not be entirely helpless to change what was happening to his home. The idea was equally motivating and oppressive. He studied fae magic in the hope of bringing something new to the table that could tip the scales, but at the same time the idea of ever actually trying to put it into action was paralysing. He renewed his contract, unwilling to face the fact that he could (and probably would) fail to fix anything, and kept telling himself that he would go back when he knew more, and could do more. All the while, the Ringmaster stubbornly tried to provoke him into doing something more. Which eventually happened, when the Warden he worked under was killed in an attack against the carnival. The Ringmaster was of the opinion that he would be a good replacement, and managed to manipulate him into accepting the position, in exchange for more magical power. Maybe if he ever went home he’d be able to put that anomaly down, once and for all. Existing Contract: Memory regains in exchange for 1st year of service. Details: When Sans first found the carnival, he signed on of his own volition, feeling that he had little reason not to try. As a challenge, he asked for the Ringmaster to restore his fragmented memories of past timelines, in order to gain a fuller understanding of the time anomaly affecting his world. She managed to give him back memories from most of the timelines he had lived out at that point, giving him a greater perspective of his situation - not that he enjoyed it, much. Existing Contract: Area of study in space-time magic for 2nd year of service. Details: Over time, Sans has been widening his repertoire concerning space-time magic, and eventually he cashed in on a favour from the Ringmaster in order to attune himself more fully to faeish spells. This has allowed him to enhance his mastery of that form of magic - the most notable trick he’d worked out as a result is making “bag of holding” style pocket dimensions, though he is aspiring towards straight up time travel. Existing Contract: Bestial form spell in exchange for 3rd year of service. Details: After the VAMPIRE WAR, Sans was officially recruited as the new Warden due to the past one’s untimely demise. Despite his reluctance, Sans agreed to take the position in exchange for enhanced physical durability and power, expecting that he would need it to survive (and with some hopes of using it when he eventually went home.) This ended up coming to him in the form of him becoming what is essentially a skeleton werewolf: he’s generally more durable in his regular form, but he is also able to transform into a strong and resilient skeleton beast that can breathe lasers like his blasters can. However, if he is defeated and forced to abandon this form, he is left exhausted and more fragile than ever for a period of time afterwards. Also, due to the development of his own magic and with the enhancements of bestial fae magic that he's bargained for, his blaster summons have been enhanced to the point of independently functioning life forms. Presently he can maintain three of them, which are now basically his skeleton dog pets. They aren't much different than when they were floating heads, power wise, but now they have personalities and a desire for skritches and naps. Current Changes:
